Having the right equipment while working on a project makes the process go much easier with less frustrations and gives you a better product. As you browse the hardware store, you can see a multitude of different power tools, which are fun.
One of the most trusted pieces of equipment with a long history is the saw. Technology has moved away from our parent's area of hand-powered saws ,that make your hands ache and take forever to accomplish a job. With the advancement of electrical devices today, jobs are completed quickly and efficiently. However, there are a variety of different devices for a variety of different jobs.
18V Circular Saw
Of these power tools, the table saw was the first powered saw. It is the gold standard for instruments providing quick and precise cuts. Most heavy-duty motors can rip through any type of hard or soft wood, but you do have a choice in motor size.
The average do-it-yourself craftsman can get by using a 1-1/2 horsepower motor. This will allow the operator to cut most woods up to 2 inches thick. Some harder species of wood will require a larger motor, such as 2 horsepower. Some larger (cabinet) saws can have motors with as much as 5 horsepower-this is typically overkill for your typical woodcutter.
Most table saws have rip fence that keeps the wood stable as it is slid through the blade this gives the craftsman a straight, precise cut. A newer feature included in most modern tools is the blade guard. Many older craftsman can tell you war stories of getting caught or nearly getting caught in a spinning blade, but not today. The blade guard stays over the blade until you begin passing the wood over the saw and then it guard slides over the wood helping to protect your hands.
Table saws can come with or without stands depending on the price you want to pay. Stands, however, provide a ergonomic elevation to make the job easier. They also come in primarily two different sizes. One is the 10 inch blade which is pretty standard, and the second is the 12 inch blade. They work equally well for most jobs. However, the 12 inch blade will ultimately cut a thicker piece of wood.
Table saws use a variety of different blades. Rip blades are designed to move wood through the saw at a fast rate. They tend to have fewer, but larger teeth. Crosscut blades, on the other hand, have up to 80 teeth and are much smaller. This blade is used for more controlled cuts with a better edge. As the name implies, it is used to cut against the grain instead of with it like a rip blade.
There are other types of blades like gullets, which offers a better cut than the rip blade, but designed to cut more material than the crosscut blades. Makes perpendicular cuts is not the only type of sawing that these tools can do. A miter gauge is an important part of the table saw. It is helps slide the piece of wood through the spinning blade and keeps the board even. If you need to make an angle cut, the miter blade can adjust to the precise angle, making it a very useful guide.
Table saws are one of the most important type of power tools available and should be in the workshop of every home craftsman. The more familiar you become with this type of equipment, the more you will learn to make specialty cuts. Finally, it will allow you to make much more precise cuts that will lead to better end products.
